The new DX-3 headphone amplifier from Rotel promises audiophile sound quality while packaging a comprehensive functionality and features list in a small chassis form factor.
The DX-3 combines high quality headphone and preamplification stages with an in-built digital-to-analogue converter featuring ESS Technology’s high-end DAC chip. Said DAC chip is the highly regarded ES9028PRO, in an 8-channel configuration, which allows 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256 via the USB input. Further digital inputs include an S-PDIF coaxial RCA socket and an optical Toslink port offering 24-bit/192 kHz resolution. Wireless streaming is supported via Bluetooth aptX HD and AAC received by a small rear panel antenna.
Analogue connectivity is provided by balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs while the DX-3 also offers a single unbalanced RCA input. The input provides preamplification functionality, with the DX-3’s volume control provided by an “audiophile grade” NJW1195A fully differential analogue attenuator circuit operating in fine 0.5dB steps. The unit features a high quality, isolated toroidal transformer manufactured in-house which is supplemented by high quality capacitors and high current drivers. The solid power supply and supporting amplification circuitry allows compatibility with a wide range of headphones.
The DX-3 also includes custom-engineered and “critically tuned” low-pass filters in a fully balanced, full differential signal path said to control noise and distortion. The DX-3’s design allows configuration as a standalone DAC. In addition, as a preamplifier, the unit also caters to a single analogue source which can directly feed a power amplifier or active loudspeakers.
As Rotel states regarding the DX-3’s chassis design, “Industrial design and build quality are both to Rotel’s exceptional standards with a full colour front panel graphic display and a single, large, diamond-knurled volume attenuator. Alternatively, the DX-3 can be operated via the included, intuitive aluminium extruded remote control.”
The Rotel DX-3 headphone amplifier is available in silver and black. Australian distributor Interdyn is offering a special price in celebration of the DX-3’s market introduction. Units are expected to arrive in the country by mid-April 2025.
