Subwoofer design authority SVS has announced the new 17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofers, a duo of distinct models sporting the company’s newest and most advanced technologies.
The new flagship 17-Ultra R|Evolution line features the sealed design SB17-Ultra R|Evolution and the top model ported PB17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofers. Both products feature what SVS has called an “unprecedented” set of technologies and advanced functions. Plus, the new subwoofers also sport the largest diameter, “most formidable” driver SVS has ever designed.
The new woofer transducer is said to be a ground-up design resulting from SVS’s best engineering efforts. The 430 mm (17-inch) woofer features a glass fibre composite cone terminated via a long-throw catenary SBR rubber surround. The driver’s motor employs a huge 25kg toroidal ferrite magnet system driving the “first-ever” 8-inch voice coil. The massive voice coil wire conductors are a copper-clad aluminium design, which is said to combine the best properties of each material, resulting in optimised thermal capacity and magnetic field strength derived from the motor.
The enormous driver is controlled via the powerful STA-2800D in-built ‘dual monoblock’ Class-D amplification supported by an output stage featuring eight 60A/200V high current MOSFETs. Each mono amplifier drives one of the voice coils, effectively doubling the power fed into the motor system. An in-built AC line conditioner with power factor correction is designed to stabilise incoming voltage while correcting waveform distortions and removing EM and RF interference.
Also integrated into both the SB17-Ultra R|Evolution and the PB17-Ultra R|Evolution are comprehensive DSP capabilities. It’s a 295 MHz Analog Devices DSP engine employed to manage amplifier functions such as thermal control, AC voltage delivery, and current monitoring. Further, the 120dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) built into the on-board DACs results in extended headroom and lower noise levels.
Controlling the DSP and subwoofer functions can be done via the dedicated SVS app which uses the smartphone’s in-built microphone for calibration. There’s control and settings functions for low-pass filter, phase, the built-in 6-band parametric EQ, room gain compensation and more. The unit offers three memory presets catering to user taste. Also available is a simple to operate ‘Auto EQ Room Correction’ feature which is also controllable via the SVS app (soon to be available via an over-the-air app/firmware software update).
SVS President Gary Yacoubian stated, “Literally every part of the flagship [17-Ultra R|Evolution] ecosystem was reimagined to achieve an unprecedented level of low frequency performance and world class user experience. They truly represent a quantum leap forward in subwoofer design and I could not be prouder of what our team accomplished.”
The new SVS 17-Ultra R|Evolution subwoofers are available in Gloss Black and Premium Black Oak wood veneer. SVS is imported into Australia via distributor Interdyn and will be available through its country-wide dealer network.
