Sonus faber Reinvents the Classic Concertino Loudspeakers

The fourth generation of Sonus faber’s iconic Concertino launches with a respectful re-imagining of core design principles while forging ahead with the company’s latest technologies.

In common with the original, which was introduced 30 years ago, the Concertino G4 is a small trapezoidal 2-way monitor built to the highest standards. The Concertino G4’s front baffle sports Sonus faber’s 25 mm D.A.D silk dome tweeter featuring an aluminium ‘Arrow Point’ phase scheme. The long throw 135 mm paper pulp mid-woofer driver sports a large magnet motor and receives additional low-frequency support via a flared walnut wood reflex ‘duct’ porting out of the speaker’s rear panel. The mid-woofer is trimmed with an aluminium dress ring. The drivers are crossed-over via a simple high quality ‘Phase-Coherent’ crossover network designed to maintain phase alignment. The speaker connectors are custom designs featuring “wooden pull rod posts”.

As is typical from Sonus faber, the cabinet is beautifully handcrafted in Italy by the most skilled artisans. For the first time as adopted in a mid-woofer driver, the Concertino G4’s “central chassis” is constructed from cork, a material which has been derived from Sonus faber’s Suprema and Sonetto upmarket speakers. The enclosure’s side walls, like the original Concertino, are crafted from solid walnut and feature a ribbing system, a strategy which is said to increase structural strength, making internal bracing superfluous. A fine ‘Made in Italy’ leather-like plant-based (orange and cactus byproducts) recycled material produced by Ohoskin lines the front baffle, runs across the top panel and down the rear panel. The company’s target with the Concertino G4 was to drastically reduce the use non-sustainable materials.

The Concertino G4’s frequency response is quoted as 60 Hz to 25 kHz (no parameters given), with a sensitivity of 85dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. The crossover point is stated at 1700 Hz.

As a celebration of the launch of Concertino G4 30 years after the original, Sonus faber is offering the ‘Concertino G4 Maestro Edition’, a special production which will be limited to 300 pairs. The limited run Maestro Edition models will feature a brass plaque with progressive serial numbers mounted on the Concertino G4’s side panels.

Sonus faber states, “This special edition embodies the rich artisanal and acoustic tradition of the renowned Italian brand. Just like in the Italian artisan workshops of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where an apprentice worked under the guidance of a master for years before becoming a journeyman and eventually aspiring to the title of master through the creation of a 'masterpiece', the Maestro Edition represents the culmination of decades of experience, craftsmanship, and innovation.”

Sonus faber also offers a bespoke dedicated stand featuring walnut wood veneer accents matching the Concertino G4’s own side panel tones. The stand’s column is “derived from IPE 120X64”, a steel support configuration used in the construction industry.

The new Sonus faber Concertino G4 loudspeakers are slated for global availability from October 2024 and will be available in Australia via local importer Synergy Audio’s country-wide specialist audio dealer network.
