Magico Brings On the A Game

High-end speaker specialist Magico, who has been trickling out its latest spare-no-expense M series speakers and continues its development of the upmarket S series, now introduces the company’s entry level A series with the new A3. The A3 speaker includes many of Magico’s trademark features in the aluminium enclosure and high quality bespoke drivers.

In the pursuit of excellence and over several product generations, Magico has developed its own set of technologies that, by nature, are costly and demand fabrication methodologies resulting in high manufacturing costs. Now, according to Magico, “with the new A series, the impossible is made possible”.

The new A3 features an elegant enclosure using the highest grade T6 6061 anodised aluminium which is also used in Magico’s renowned Q series. In the A3, the enclosure bracing system has been simplified yet it retains structural integrity via a reinforcement scheme based on steel bracing and an exterior ‘skin’ exoskeleton which encases the bracing skeleton.

Magico has retained the high quality standards for their driver choices. The A3 features a new beryllium diaphragm 28mm tweeter based on the transducer developed for the M-Project limited edition speaker. The new tweeter features an improved damped back chamber construction and a large overhung neodymium motor system. The tweeter is said to cope with large amounts of power yet produces very low distortion while capable of tremendous dynamic range.

Equal care has been given to the new midrange driver, a 165mm unit employing multi-layers of carbon fibre and a layer of XG Nano-Graphene. The new cone material is said to provide optimum stiffness-to-weight ratio and ‘ideal damping factor’. The 75mm titanium voice coil is, once again, suspended within an overhung extra-large magnet system which provides improved sensitivity and low distortion.

Twin 180mm low-end drivers feature cones are derived from Magico’s latest ‘Gen 8’ Nano-Tec technology. These new drivers feature superb stiffness-to-weigh ratios and large neodymium (N48) underhung magnet systems. A new chassis design optimises air flow around the drivers and 75mm titanium voice coil system and has been constructed in order to reduce vibrational distortion and acoustical influence. The sum-of-all-parts here translates to high power, good efficiency and low distortion.

Magico

Magico uses its Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology which is said to use state-of-the-art components from Germany’s Mundorf. The 3-way network features a 24dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filter designed to “maximise frequency bandwidth while preserving phase linearity and minimizing intermodulation distortion.”

“The A3 Midrange and Low frequency drivers were optimized for minimal music related distortions in its band-pass, in both the frequency and time domains using latest state of the art FEA simulation of acoustical, mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal behaviour. All of this is now being done on a single platform, allowing Magico to take the next step in performance optimization” explains Magico founder Alon Wolf.

The A3’s specifications seem impressive for a speaker of its size. Frequency response has been stated to span from 22Hz to 50kHz (no parameters quoted) with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity quoted as 88dB. Minimum recommended power is 50 watts. The svelte enclosure dimensions are 1120mm high by 270mm deep and 230mm wide while the speaker weighs in at 50kg.

The new Magico A3 is available in Australia through specialist dealers and is priced at AU$14,000.
